What to Wear
Have fun and be yourself, I just tell people to kick it up a notch from your normal day to day! But first things first…coordinate! Now this doesn’t mean everyone has to 100% match with khaki pants or jeans and a white shirt! You want to complement each other’s outfits by choosing colors that work well together. I find that if everyone is wearing the same clothing, people will all tend to blend in together and there won’t be too much pop and life to the images. Coordinate VS. Matching…. let’s not get cheesy!
Textures and layers really add dimension to a photograph. Try to stay away from busy shirts with large logos or words on them but don’t be afraid of patterns such as plaids, checks, stripes and florals. I also recommend not wearing too much white (it will wash you out) or put too many in black (can look a little blah). It looks great when a family chooses shirts or outfits all from the same color palatte or that compliment one another.
In the spring and summer little boys look handsome in jeans or cargo shorts with a button up or solid color tee and paired with converse, flip flops or bare feet. You can’t go wrong with a fun sundress or ruffled skirt and sandals for little girls. If you are wearing shoes, make sure that they are in good shape and scuff free. In the fall go for layers, textures and warm colors. Think plaid shirts with vests, sweaters, cordoroy, jeans, patterned leggings and boots!
Don’t forget about fun accessories such as hats, scarves, funky belts, chunky jewlery, tutus and leggings. If children are being photographed together, clothes that are similar in style and color give a more coordinated look.
For newborns and babies, soft blankets, cute patterned wraps and hats to snuggle them in and if it’s an outfit make sure that it doesn’t ride up for the little ones that can’t sit up on their own yet. Of course, their soft bare skin is just meant to be captured too!

*If I were building outfits for my family this is how I would do itKeeping your location and season in mind, start with one person. Don’t try and think of everyone at the same time. I find that mom or a little girl makes the most sense since they would typically be the ones wearing a print. So mom will be wearing a floral print dress (small pretty pattern that is).
Now move on to the next person. You will be pulling colors from mom’s dress so begin to think about who in the family would look good in what colors. Dad doesn’t look so good in XYZ since it tends to drown out the tone in his skin. Let’s pick ABC for him instead. And so on.
